Charging Accessories Explained: Watts, GaN, and Why Your Phone Charges Slow

Few accessories cause more confusion — or more wasted money — than chargers. A phone that used to fill up in an hour now crawls, a new 'fast charger' changes nothing, and the spec sheet reads like alphabet soup. The reality is simpler than it looks. Here is what actually determines charging speed, explained with real products and prices from our accessories shelves.
Watts are volts times amps
Wattage is the whole story of charging speed, and it is just volts multiplied by amps. A basic 5V/2A charger delivers 10W. If your phone can accept 25W but the adapter supplies 10W, you get 10W — the phone cannot pull power the charger does not have. The good news: the reverse is safe. Plugging a 10W-capable phone into a 120W charger does not force 120W into it; the phone draws only what it is designed for. Bigger chargers do not damage small phones.
Why your phone charges slowly
Four usual suspects, in order. First, the adapter: that old 5W brick in the drawer still works, just slowly. Second, the cable: cables carry current, and a worn or unrated cable throttles it — a basic 2A cable (MK 2,500) is fine for 10W charging, but fast charging needs a rated cable like the 65W ultra-fast USB cable at MK 7,000. Third, protocol mismatch, explained below. Fourth, heat and battery age: phones deliberately slow charging when hot, and worn batteries accept power more reluctantly.
PD and QC: the languages chargers speak
Fast charging only happens when phone and charger speak the same protocol. USB Power Delivery (PD) is the standard for iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, and most USB-C laptops; Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) is common on Android. Many modern chargers speak both — the Green Lion dual-port wall charger with PD and QC 3.0 at MK 20,000, for example. Samsung adds a wrinkle: its 25W and 45W 'Super Fast Charging' modes need PD with PPS, which generic chargers often lack. For a Galaxy, the safe picks are the genuine 25W travel adapter at MK 30,000 or the 45W PD adapter at MK 50,000.
What GaN actually changes
GaN stands for gallium nitride, a material that switches power more efficiently than the silicon in older chargers. The practical benefit is not speed but size and heat: GaN chargers deliver laptop-class wattage from a plug half the size and run cooler doing it. Match the charger to your phone
